The bridge was built by Thomas Telford between 1825 and 1828, to carry traffic east-west. It was opened in 1830 and remained in use for traffic until 1974. Until the Severn Bridge was built in the 1960s, this was the lowest point downstream that the Severn could be crossed by a road bridge.
We parked on the road by 'The lock keepers’, there's a footpath that takes you to it.

On Alney Island, built by Telford to replace the medieval bridge, used as the A40 crossing of the Severn until the 70s.

This is now the longest single-span stone bridge in Europe. Quite a feet given that it was built 200 years ago.
When completed, the centre sank significantly(see picture), so they waited to see whether it would fall.
Until 1966, all traffic between South Wales and the West of England.

A historic bridge which is still a very useful, pleasant link into Gloucester by foot or bicycle, so you can avoid riding along the busy dual carriageway into the city.

The old over bridge is intresting and ofcourse its goes over the river so from the top the views are good .
