I'd hired a caley cruiser in Inverness for a boating holiday and wasn't allowed to descend the Neptunes staircase.
So I'd walked from the top, down to the swing bridge and then a local bus ride into Fort William.
Local fishermen were catching eels near the swing bridge.
Time stood still on the boating holiday, highly recommended.
I went in the 80's.

Such an impressive bridge. Something as big can open to let boats through is very cool. Worth the walk around and to watch boats go by.

This is a fun bridge to watch at the bottom of Neptune's Staircase, because you can get really close up. It's not a fun bridge to be caught by when you are driving because it keeps you waiting for ages as it closes again after the last boat has gone through.

A great bit of engineering. Both the road and rail bridges. Both are swung open to allow boats through the canal either on their way to Corpach sealocks and on out to sea or on their way from the sea up Neptune's staircase and north east up through the Caledonian Canal to Inverness.
